PM Narendra Modi has announced that Indian Railways will team up with Google to provide Wi-Fi at 500 railway stations by next year. The announcement came during the PM’s visit to Google’s head quarters.

Modi was presented with Google Earth presentation, which showed the ghats of Varanasi, his Lok Sabha constituency. PM took a tour of the Google campus to have a look to the latest products and forward-looking researches. Appreciating the search engine, Modi asked Google to develop Apps beneficixal to common man. PM announced that, "Indian Railways and Google will collaborate to provide wi-fi at 500 railway stations in India."

Earlier, Sundar Pichai, India-born Google CEO announced that the search engine would deploy high speed internet services initially at 100 Indian railway stations, with an expansion to more 400 by next year.

Pichai, 43-year-old, recalled his young days when he travelled from Chennai to Kharagpur by train and noted that on daily basis 25 million people travel on Indian Railways comprising 7500 stations. It was pointed by him that the length of the railways is two times the distance between Moon and Earth, while Modi pointed out that the Indian Railway network is equal to a country in Europe.

'Digital India' campaign

According to Pichai, alumunus of IIT-Kharagpur, the provision of the wi-fi services is to support Narendra Modi's 'Digital India' campaign. Announcement was also made by him regarding the launch of Android soon that facilitates the users to type in 11 of the Indian languages. His also include Gujarati, Modi’s mother tongue.

Confidence was expressed by the Prime Minister that technology will be bring change in life with time along with its proper utilization, urging Google employees to look for solutions adrreesing problems like poverty.
