A new study released shows positive effect of fish oil on chemotherapy undergone people. Report says that fish oil may reduce the suffering of chemotherapy by half.

The research led by Dr. Emilie Voest, the medical director of the Netherlands Cancer Institute found that fatty acids found in certain fish and fish oil supplements seized the drug’s cancer fighting properties. The team had conducted the experiment on mice with tumors.

"You lose at least halve the effect of the chemotherapy because of the fish oil," Voest told.

The experiment is yet to give a concrete proof after examining on human.

"It's difficult to extrapolate (this research) to humans," says Dr. Lauren Cassell, chief of breast surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital.

The evidence need more researches to be done before coming to a final conclusion, said Voest.

Chemotherapy is a treatment to stop or slow the growth of cancer cells. It is done by cytotoxic and other drugs. Side effects of this treatment occur when healthy cells that help in maintaining body’s function and appearance are also damaged during the process.

Fatigue, pain, sores in mouth and throat, diarrhea, vomiting and constipation are some of the impact of the Chemotherapy.
