Jammu and Kashmir has been ravaged by flood waters and media has been flashing disturbing images of destruction in the beautiful state. People have been rendered helpless with water submerging their homes and business. Pictures of people sobbing, ashen faces with hopeless look huddling around Army personnel have become a familiar sight on internet.

The images have a humbling and terrifying effect on all viewers. The social media was immediately mobilised and for a moment it seemed that India's netizens have risen above religion and petty politics. They seemed be usining Twitter and Facebook into a forum to mobilise relief operations.

Over the last two days, Twitter users had extensively used the social platform to share information, send SOS about stranded victims, urging rescue aid and dispensing aid. They seemed to be patriotic nationals sharing information about Army, government and other private helplines working at the ground level.

However, India's netizens, known for their penchant for aggressive and noxious debates, could not resist the urge to pass snide remarks, even at a time of such grave calamity. Or maybe Kashmir and Twitter is a noxious combination, and expecting them to behave was a bit too much to ask for.

Twitter reached a new low during the Jammu and Kashmir floods.

The hashtag #KashmirFloods continues to trend on Twitter India, but it has been hijacked by trolls and degenerated into the all-too familiar religious bickering on social media.

The Hindutva trolls unabashedly justified the floods as avenging Kashmiri Pandits forced to flee their homelands. Some even pointed out that Hindutva outfits like the RSS were providing aid to the muslims, who hate them.

Another group of tweets declared the Indian Army as a Hindu entity, trying to point out the irony of a Hindu Army providing rescue aid to Kashmiri Muslims who pelt stones at them.

A small group of Muslim voices from India blamed Hindu pilgrims and the Indian army for bringing the floods upon them by destroying the ecology of Kashmir.

Now the Kashmir floods seems to have ceased to be a tragedy social media, it has degenerated into a war.

Here are some tweets circulating on Twitter, trying to establish some sort of Hindu supremacy in social media.

Muslim voices were not to be cowered. Here are some of their tweets.

However, there are some sane voices as well.
