US asks citizens to be cautious while travelling to UP in view of CAA protests

A travel advisory was issued by the United States on Monday which asked its citizens to ‘exercise caution’ while they travel to Uttar Pradesh, which witnesses demonstrations against the Citizenship Amendment Act.

Washington DC asked its citizens to monitor the local media for the news that concerns demonstrations and their locations and to avoid the places where the protests are taking place.

“Keep a low profile. Be aware of your surroundings. Monitor local media for updates. Review your personal security plans. Notify friends and family of your safety. Follow the instructions of the local authorities,” stated the US embassy.

“US citizens should exercise caution in light of continued protests and demonstrations, which are continuing in many parts of India. While demonstrations in the National Capital Region have been relatively peaceful over the past few days, US citizens should continue to monitor local media for news concerning,” the statement read.

Over 20 people were killed in the protests which were erupted after the CAA was passed from the Parliament on December 12.

The citizenship Amendment Act which was passed earlier this month grants Indian citizenship to the non-Muslim communities I.e.,Hindus, Sikhs, Parsis, Jains, Buddists, Christians from the three neighbouring countries Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh who entered India on or before December 31, 2014.
