Favipiravir Launched in India at Rs. 49 per Tablet

Pharma Company Lupin has received authorization from the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) for emergency use on COVID-19 patients as a potential treatment.

Lupin Limited, a pharmaceutical company on Wednesday announced the launch of Favipiravir tablets under the brand name Covihalt for the treatment of COVID-19 in mold to moderate symptomatic patients.

Favipiravir tablets come in a strip of 10 tablets and each tablet costs Rs. 49 in India. The antiviral drug has received authorization from Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) for emergency use on COVID-19 patients as a potential treatment. The drug is available in the form of 200 mg tablets.

Rajeev Sibal, the President of Lupin Ltd in a media briefing said that coronavirus is a global pandemic and India is seeing surge in positive cases on daily basis.

He said that during these challenging times it is their duty to support the nation in fighting the pandemic and ensuring quality drugs are made available to the impacted patients in the country.

A day earlier, Sun Pharma, a leading Pharma firm has launched favipiravir COVID-19 drug at Rs. 35 per tablet.

Lupin ltd has 15 manufacturing sites in the world and 7 research centers and more than 20,000 professional workers globally.

The company develops and commercializes wide range of branded and generic formulations and biotechnology products in over 100 markets in the United States, India, South Africa, Latin America, Europe and the Middle East nations.

India has 3 types of COVID-19 vaccines at different stages of trials and production. It is expected the country gets the vaccine by the end of this year but WHO claims no COVID-19 vaccine can be made available until early next year.

India’s coronavirus cases stand at 19,00,000 as on Thursday, August 6. The country has reported around 1.28 million recovered cases. The death toll in the country stands at 39,795.

India is seeing biggest jumps in number of coronavirus cases on daily basis and the number of tests conducted in the country has crossed 2 crores.

The world currently has 18.8 million confirmed cases of coronavirus. In all these cases reported, 11.3 million have already recovered. The death toll in the world stands at 706k.
