Indian Railways to eliminate Carbon Emission by 2030

Earlier, Railway Minister Piyush Goyal had set a target 100% electrification of train networks by 2023.

Union Railways Minister Piyush Goyal on Wednesday took to Twitter to announce that the Indian Railways is looking to wipe out carbon emission from the country by 2030.

He said that by the end of 2030, the carbon emissions from the Indian railways will be zero. Indian Railways transports nearly 8 billion passengers and 1.2 billion tonnes of freight every year.

Indian Railways will be the first railways in the world to go green by 2030 if this project will be successful.

NITI Aayog, the government’s think tank has said that the carbon emission from the Indian railways was 6.84 million tonnes in 2014.

Earlier, Railway Minister Piyush Goyal had set a target 100% electrification of train networks by 2023.

Experts claim that 100 percent electrification of the rail network would also help in increasing the average speed of the trains.

Moreover, Indian railways is now inviting private railways to operate its passenger trains along 109 important routes of India.

The Union Ministry has always said that the mega project of privatization if Indian Railways will have immense benefits including an increase in annual revenue for the railways. Privatization is all set to bring new technologies and boost employment in the Indian Railways.

In addition to the passenger trains that are being run by the government, the private players will initially run 51 new passenger trains with new technologies embedded from 2023.

Indian Railways has also clarified that the trains operated by the private players can neither be taken for lease nor can be purchased for other entities for the functioning.

It was also already clarified that the risks associated with the operations of private trains in the country will be shared in an equitable manner between both the Indian Railways and the private players that are running the trains.

Railways aims to complete the bidding process and introduce the first private train on track by March 2023. The trains from the private players will be introduced in a phased manner across different routes of the country.

Indian railways has also earlier reported that some of the private players are now introducing new age trains with materials that can kill coronavirus. Foot operated basins and entry and exit doors will also be introduced in the new trains which be run by private organizations.

The price of tickets for the private trains shall be decided by the Indian railways itself.
