Story

There are some thumb rules that govern the film industry. One such rule says that a remake film is never as good as the Original... be it remade in the same language after a few decades - like "Sholay" being remade into "Aag" ; or remade into a different language within a short span of time - like "KakhaKakha" being remade into "Garshana" or "Force". But "Papanasam" seems to be an exception to that thumb rule. The credit does not go to the director, but goes to our Universal Hero. This is not the first time, but time and again Kamal Hassan has made it clear that when he chooses to act in a remake film, he is determined to give something better than the Original. He has demonstrated this in "Vasool Raja MBBS" and " Unnai Pol Oruvan" .

Analysis :

On the downside, Gibran's tunes as well as the BGM is a big letdown. Even the recording was not very good. The overall sound recording of the movie was very bassy. The level of sound that comes from the surround speakers must always be a little less than the Center Channel, The Front Right and the From Left. But, in the movie, the levels seemed to be similar making the surround effects more evident than being subtle. The camera work is not very great- there are a few blocks that look picture perfect but nothing more than it. The editing looked decent, but not without jump cuts in a few places.

Though the story and screenplay is identical to the Malayalam movie "Dhrishyam", there are some evident changes in the way and tenor our Universal Hero unfolds his emotional anger and street smartness in tackling the issue of saving his family - a typical Kamal way. The good thing is that though the Kamal trademark is very evident in most parts of the movie, unlike his previous adventure "Uttama Villain", Kamal's trademark does not bore you ( at this juncture, I would like to make it very clear, that last time I made a similar statement, some very subjective Kamal fans criticised my comment by hinting that "Uttama Villain" is not for the common man and one requires a very level of intellect to appreciate it... well for those people, kindly remember that I am a man on the clapham omnibus and I speak for those other men on the clapham omnibus).

Final Word:
There is no point in watching a thriller movie for the second time, because you know the suspense when you watch the first time... but let that not stop you from watching "Papanasam". You must watch it even if you have the Malayalam version and you will still enjoy it.
