Sitaare Zameen Par narrates the tale of Gulshan (Aamir Khan), an assistant football coach who finds himself discontented with his career and grappling with unresolved issues in his relationship with his estranged spouse, Suneeta (Genelia Deshmukh). Following an incident where he slapped a senior coach, Gulshan faces suspension and further complicates his situation by getting involved in a drunk driving incident, leading to a sentence of community service. His task requires him to coach a team of individuals with intellectual disabilities for a basketball championship tailored for the specially abled. As he navigates this unexpected challenge, he encounters difficulties in both training them and overcoming his own prejudices, initially dismissing their abilities due to their perceived limitations. Nevertheless, this team unexpectedly becomes the most influential teachers in Gulshan’s journey.

Analysis

In a particular scene, Gurpal Singh’s character informs a frustrated Gulshan (played by Aamir Khan) that each person has their own version of what is considered ‘normal.’ This idea is central to Sitaare Zameen Par, which derives inspiration from the 2018 Spanish film, Champions, and acts as a spiritual continuation of the 2007 film, Taare Zameen Par. The movie highlights the significance of changing negative perceptions toward individuals with Down Syndrome, encouraging viewers to confront their fears and shortcomings rather than flee from them, embracing these challenges with a positive mindset.

R. S. Prasanna narrates a touching tale that reveals how those with special abilities possess a unique ‘normal’ that is often more uplifting and heartwarming than what society deems normal. The script's focal point is the journey of the film's main character, who evolves from someone oblivious and who refers to his team with terms like “Bechare,” “Pagal,” and “Mental” to becoming their greatest ally. Gulshan, portrayed by Aamir Khan, ultimately understands that the individuals regarded as “abnormal” by society are, in fact, the ones imparting the most valuable life lessons to him.

One poignant moment features Gulshan debating with his wife about their differing views on parenthood. He expresses concerns that having a child at their current age may lead to the possibility of the child being born with Down Syndrome or another disability. In response, a member of his team points out that while many desire a typical child, every child is deserving of a father like Gulshan—someone who has inspired hope and led them to triumph in their football championship games. This exchange not only evokes deep emotion but also highlights the purity and kindness found in these so-called imperfect individuals, who are capable of recognizing beauty, even amidst their challenges.

Throughout Sitaare Zameen Par, numerous moments—such as characters like Gulshan and Guddu conquering their fears of elevators and water, respectively—offer scenes that may lead to tears of joy. The film also successfully weaves in comedic moments that come across as genuine rather than contrived. However, one critique of the film pertains to the editing, which could benefit from being more polished in certain sections to help streamline its overall length.

Performance

Aamir Khan truly excels with this performance, and it’s remarkable how. In the initial half, he embodies a character that is overtly ignorant, audacious, impulsive, negligent, and somewhat toxic, and he captures these traits wonderfully. Yet, as the story unfolds, we see his character's vulnerability and fear emerge, culminating in a process of accepting the numerous lessons imparted by his “Sitaare” team. This transition allows him to deliver a performance that is both subtle and well-rounded. It's been a long time since we witnessed the superstar effectively handle comedic moments as well.

A heartfelt acknowledgment goes to all the “Sitaare” featured in this film – Aroush Dutta, Gopi Krishnan Varma, Vedant Sharma, Naman Misra, Rishi Shahani, Rishabh Jain, Ashish Pendse, Samvit Desai, Simran Mangeshkar, and Aayush Bhansali, who all shine with their impressive and charming portrayals. Genelia Deshmukh fulfills her role wonderfully, and the chemistry between her and Aamir Khan feels genuine. However, it was Dolly Ahluwalia who truly captured my affection! Her comedic timing brought endless laughter, and her entertaining dialogue delivery was unmatched. Additionally, she excelled in the poignant moments, particularly when she encourages her son to support the team, which indeed requires his perseverance and insight. Brijendra Kala and Gurpal Singh also delivered charming performances in their respective roles.

Final Word

Sitaare Zameen Par is engaging, emotional and offers a perfect ride to watch in theatres.
