A Brigham Young University (BYU) team found that performing multiple family roles, is causing mental stress, which sometimes leads to depression. The study said depression risk in mothers and fathers increases when they carry out large number of parenting roles.

The scholars of BYU reported that the parents of blended families playing three roles simultaneously are 57 percent more likely to be depressed than those with just a single parenting role; parents will have guilty feeling, when they spend more time with their new children than their older children or when a new baby comes along.

Kevin Shafer, a professor of social work at BYU said that there was a stigma that mothers usually get stressed due to their parenting responsibilities, but on board it is a step father, who actually faces the trouble in managing the things.  He said that the stress comes from the good place only because of the stepdads intention to satisfy all even in tight schedules. Well management of time and situations can avoid stress as well as depressions.

The study is published in the journal Social Work.
