On Sunday, Nawaz Sharif, Pakistan Prime Minister, said to Susan Rice, US national security adviser, that he wants meaningful and objective talks with India. Sharif wanted objective dialogue on all outstanding issues.
Reports said that Susan Rice is on an ‘emergency visit’ to Islamabad in the wake of tensions across Indo-Pak border.
According to Dawn News reports, Sharif informed about the reasons behind the cancellation of the NSA level talks between India and Pakistan during his meet with the US delegate, while talking about the ties with India.
Day-long visit by Rice
On a day-long visit of Rice in Pakistan, the delegates exchanged their views on several matters besides preparing the agenda for Nawaz Sharif’s visit in October to the US. A statement from the Sharif's office said the meeting is "focused on matters of bilateral interest and the future of Pakistan-US relations." It made no direct reference to his comments on relations with India.
Without going into the details, the statement also said, "The situation in the region also came under discussion.”
Is Rice's visit coincidence?
The White House has asserted that Rice's visit was planned well ahead and was not an emergency visit to Pakistan due to increasing tension in the region.
The visit of Rice coincides with a acceleration in tension between India and Pakistan across the LoC. So far there were more than 245 ceasefire violations by Pakistan during 2015, while 55 ceasefire violations were in August itself.
