
An UAE based Indian billionaire is going to donate a total of US $130,790 to help the funding of return tickets of expatriates prisoner who have been released from prisons in the nation.
Firoz Merchant, who is the founder and chairman of ‘Pure Gold Jewelers, has just signed a memorandum of understanding with the UAE’s Faraj Fund. It is a charity intitiative that seeks to promote the welfare of inmates in the nation.
Mr. Merchant promised to provide 480,000 Dhirams a year to fund the air tickets for released prisoners, to help them to go back to their home country and reunite with their families.
Faraj Fund was established back in June 2009 in Abu Dhabi through a decree issued by the Minister of Social Affairs.
The fund will be extended to prisoner who cannot afford to pay their fare. A monthly budget of Dh 40,000 will be released to Faraj Fund once it submits a lists of deported inmates.
Mr. Merchant is a Mumbai born businessman, who has ongoing initiate to help clear the debts of expatriates who land in UAE prison, has just secured the release of 132 prisoner by paying off combined borrowings worth Dh150,000.
"These prisoners are victims of circumstances and are not real criminals. They are in jail because of debt," Merchant had said.
Merchant is also working on providing financial aid to Ajman Police for the medical treatment of a policeman suffering from neurological disorder. An amount of Dh 60,000 shall be allocated for his Chinese acupuncture treatment in Jordan.
