Taranjit Singh Sandhu to take Charge as the new India’s Ambassador to the US

Taranjit Singh Sandhu will be taking charge as the new Ambassador to the United States. He is currently India’s ambassador to Sri Lanka and will be succeeding Harsh Vardhan Shringla, the new Foreign Secretary-designate,who will be taking charge on January 29, 2020.

No official announcements have been made but it is said by the official sources that the component authority has cleared the file relating to the Ambassador’s appointment.


Sandhu is currently serving as the High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka since January 24, 2017.

He had previously served as the consul general in Frankfurt, Germany 2011 to 2013. Later on, served as the Deputy Chief of Mission at Embassy of India in Washington DC from 2013 to 2017. he had also previously served in the Indian mission in DC between 1997 to 2000.

The Ambassador is also credited with opening the Indian embassy in Ukraine where in he has served as the head of the political and administration wings from 1992 to 1994. Taranjit Singh Sandhu has joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1998 and is an alumni of Jawaharlal Nehru University.

The officials told ANI that the procedures for appointing the new Ambassador are underway in Washington DC and that that the appointment of Sandhu as the new Ambassador to the United States will be made soon.
