The Telecom Ministry has recently announced a new set of rules for purchasing a new mobile connection, effective from January 1, 2024. The aim of these changes is to encourage digitalization in the country and simplify the process of obtaining a SIM card. The Department of Telecommunications (Telecom Ministry) has informed that paper-based Know Your Customer (KYC) for acquiring a new SIM card will no longer be permitted, and customers will now be required to submit only digital or e-KYC documents.
The Telecom Department of the Ministry of Communications has issued a notification stating that significant changes will be implemented in the rules for purchasing SIM cards from the beginning of the new year. The switch to e-KYC for SIM card acquisition means that paper-based KYC will be completely discontinued.
It is important to note that apart from the modification related to KYC, the other rules for obtaining a new mobile connection will remain unchanged. Previously, customers had the option to complete both paper-based and e-KYC processes to obtain a SIM card. However, the use of paper-based KYC will be completely stopped from January 1.
Furthermore, the Telecom Ministry has introduced another rule concerning SIM cards. As per the new regulation, only a limited number of SIM cards can be issued under one ID starting from December 1. The process of completing the KYC will be obligatory before purchasing a SIM card, and both the buyer and seller will be required to register. If an individual intends to purchase multiple SIM cards simultaneously, they will only be able to do so through a commercial connection.
These changes reflect the government's efforts to promote digitalization and streamline the process of obtaining a new mobile connection. By transitioning to e-KYC and limiting the number of SIM cards under a single ID, these new rules aim to enhance security and control over SIM card distribution.
