The Kolkata Police took extensive security measures for the "Nabannno Abhijan" protest march, but were unable to fully control the protesters as they broke through the barricades. The protest targeted the state secretariat, known as Nabanno, which houses the offices of the Chief Minister and other senior government officials. The march was organized by an unregistered group claiming to be a students' organization, seeking justice for the rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College on August 9. To strengthen the case, the CBI will consult experts from the All India Institute of Medical Science to review the DNA and forensic reports related to the alleged crime. The agency aims to determine if Sanjay Roy was the sole perpetrator or if others were involved.

The BJP has accused West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of shielding those involved in the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata. They have called her a "dictator" and demanded her resignation to ensure a fair investigation. The BJP has condemned the police's use of lathi charge on students who were protesting and demanding justice for the victim. They have called for a 12-hour strike in West Bengal tomorrow to protest the police action on the march to the state secretariat. Chaotic scenes occurred on the streets leading to the state secretariat as the police intercepted the protest march. The police used force, such as cannons and batons, to prevent the protesters from reaching the state secretariat. Some of the protesters were observed throwing stones at the police officers.
