On Monday morning, the Delhi NCR region felt earthquake tremors, with the National Center for Seismology (NCS) reporting a magnitude of 4.0. The seismic activity was centered in New Delhi at a depth of five kilometers, according to the NCS. The tremors were detected at 5:36 am, based on the agency's findings. Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to X to note that both Delhi and surrounding areas experienced the tremors, urging vigilance regarding potential aftershocks. He stated, “Tremors were felt in Delhi and nearby areas. I encourage everyone to remain calm and adhere to safety measures, staying alert for possible aftershocks. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely.” Numerous individuals took to the micro-blogging platform X to express their sentiments, including political figures from both the BJP and Congress, who characterized the tremors as "strong."

The Delhi Police also shared a post on X, providing an emergency contact for aid. “We hope everyone is safe, Delhi! For any urgent assistance, please Dial112. Earthquake,” their message conveyed. An official informed PTI that the epicenter was near Durgabai Deshmukh College of Special Education, situated in Dhaula Kuan. The area, which houses a nearby lake, has a history of minor earthquakes occurring every couple of years. In 2015, a quake with a magnitude of 3.3 was recorded, as per the official source. Additionally, a loud noise was reported at the time of the earthquake, he noted. The intensity of the tremors led many residents of tall buildings across Delhi, Noida, Greater Noida, and Ghaziabad to rush outdoors.
We hope you all are safe, Delhi !

A woman in her 50s, who was taking a morning walk in E Block of Noida Sector 20, mentioned, "We were in the park, so we didn’t feel it too strongly. However, it was significant. People dashed out." Furthermore, at Jheel Park in Dhaula Kuan, a tree approximately 20-25 years old was uprooted as a result of the morning's 4.0-magnitude quake. Caretakers at the park confirmed the damage caused by the tremors. The strong tremors were indeed felt in Delhi and surrounding areas at 5:36 am today, following the earthquake that originated just five kilometers below the Earth's surface.

According to a senior scientist who spoke with PTI, the tremors that affected the national capital on Monday morning resulted from natural fluctuations in the region's geological characteristics instead of movements in tectonic plates. The epicenter of the 4.0-magnitude quake was detected in the Jheel Park area close to Dhaula Kuan, with its shallow depth contributing to the loud sounds experienced during the earth’s movement in adjacent locales. The Delhi region, located in northern India, frequently encounters tremors due to earthquakes from distant sources such as the Himalayas and local geological phenomena. The Delhi Disaster Management Authority states that the city is prone to considerable seismic activity, with earthquakes generally ranging from magnitudes 5-6, occasionally reaching levels of 6-7, and in rare cases, even 7-8, classifying it as a high-risk area.
Union Minister of Earth Sciences Jitendra Singh indicated that authorities are closely observing the aftermath of the strong 4.0-magnitude quake that impacted parts of Delhi NCR. Earthquakes are relatively common in Delhi, where tremors are sometimes felt. A significant 7.1-magnitude earthquake in Kathmandu, Nepal, the previous month also triggered tremors in the Delhi-NCR region.
