A significant achievement is coming for the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, as the large tunnel being constructed under the ‘Missing Link’ project is expected to be the widest tunnel worldwide. The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has already started the process to gain entry into the Guinness World Records by submitting an official request. Inspectors from Guinness have visited the site, indicating that the project may receive international acknowledgement. The Mumbai-Pune Expressway has experienced severe traffic jams for a long time, especially in the Khandala Ghat area, causing delays and longer travel times. To address these ongoing problems, officials are utilizing modern engineering techniques, with the ‘Missing Link’ project emerging as a revolutionary approach to reduce congestion and enhance travel efficiency between the two cities.

The initiative is taking place between the Khopoli exit and Kusgaon close to Lonavala. This new route is designed to avoid the crowded ghat section and is anticipated to greatly improve traffic flow and safety for travelers. A major feature of the project is the building of two parallel tunnels, each having four lanes in both directions. The main tunnel is about 8.7 kilometres long and will be 23.5 metres wide once finalized, making it the largest tunnel in the world. The second tunnel is approximately 1.67 kilometres long. Both tunnels will include four lanes for vehicles along with a specific service road, promoting smoother and more effective traffic movement. Besides the tunnels, the initiative also features a stunning 950-metre-long cable-stayed bridge. Soaring nearly 100 metres off the ground, the bridge reaches an overall height of 183 metres. It is constructed with advanced engineering methods, designed to withstand wind speeds of up to 250 kilometres per hour, ensuring strength and durability.

The overall length of the ‘Missing Link’ project is roughly 13.3 kilometres, with a projected cost of Rs 6,695 crore. When it becomes operational, it is expected to shorten the distance between Mumbai and Pune by about 6 kilometres and decrease travel time by close to 25 minutes. Work on the tunnel has been finished, while the cable-stayed bridge is nearing completion. MSRDC aims to finish the leftover tasks and open the route by May 1. With its significant scale, innovative features, and potential for global recognition, the ‘Missing Link’ project is ready to change travel on one of India's most packed expressways. By alleviating congestion and enhancing connectivity, it promises to provide a quicker, safer, and more efficient experience for countless commuters traveling between Mumbai and Pune.
