If your phone vibrated today because of a serious government notification, you are not the only one, and there is no reason to be alarmed. On Saturday, millions of people across India received a test notification as the Government of India officially launched its home-grown Cell Broadcast emergency alert system. The message, labeled "Extremely Severe Alert," informed the public that India has started a new immediate disaster alert service using local technology, and it clearly stated that no response was needed from the people. An official announcement from the government stated that this system was introduced by Union Home Minister Amit Shah along with Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on May 2, 2026. This initiative centers around a platform known as SACHET, which means the Integrated Alert System. SACHET was created by the Centre for Development of Telematics, or C-DOT, which is the leading research center under the Department of Telecommunications, and it follows the Common Alerting Protocol suggested by the International Telecommunication Union. It is now active in all 36 states and union territories in India.

So far, disaster management authorities have used this system to send out over 134 billion SMS alerts in more than 19 Indian languages during natural calamities, weather alerts, and cyclonic situations. The new Cell Broadcast technology is a big improvement compared to standard SMS alerts. Unlike regular SMS messages, Cell Broadcast alerts are meant to catch immediate attention. When activated, they override usual phone settings, creating a loud alarm sound and a clear message on the screen, ensuring that users with their phones on silent or do-not-disturb modes still receive the notifications. The system is made to provide vital information during natural disasters like earthquakes, tsunamis, and lightning strikes, as well as human-caused emergencies such as gas leaks and chemical dangers.

Once fully implemented, the Cell Broadcast system will send alerts to all mobile phones regardless of individual settings, making sure that everyone gets important information during real emergencies.
