Banker and Kotak Mahindra Bank's founder, Uday Kotak, stated on Tuesday that he supports Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent comments on saving money and cutting back on spending. He emphasized that India needs to get ready for ongoing global challenges and must avoid excessive spending. While speaking with industry leaders at the CII Annual Summit, Kotak mentioned that the Prime Minister's words highlight a greater concern about India's economic strength during times of global instability and energy risks. Talking about the current situation in West Asia, Kotak referred to it as a more significant and complicated issue than it appears, stressing the importance of preparing for external disturbances. He explained that the Prime Minister's call to lessen wasteful spending aligns with the goal of improving India’s financial health. There are straightforward actions a country can implement, like reducing wasteful consumption, which is not helpful. I approach it as examining the financials of the nation, Kotak stated.

The experienced banker also brought up a previous statement from the Prime Minister encouraging Indians to have weddings in the country instead of abroad, emphasizing that this advice holds deeper economic implications. "What he said was simple but meaningful," Kotak pointed out. "A truly self-sufficient nation is one that does not rely on the funding or strength of others. " Kotak remarked that the global situation has significantly shifted from a connected world, created over many years, to a more protectionist and self-sufficient environment. "What we are experiencing now is quite the opposite: it's every individual for themselves," he noted. "If you spend beyond your limits, eventually, you will face consequences. " Kotak cautioned that the effects of the conflict in the Middle East on global energy prices have yet to fully impact consumers and businesses in India.

"We have not yet noticed how the past two months of the Middle East conflict have affected energy prices. It's on its way, and it’s going to be significant," he stated. He mentioned that consumers with lower incomes will soon experience financial strain due to increasing fuel-linked prices in various sectors. "The impact is approaching," Kotak warned, encouraging businesses and policymakers to get ready ahead of time. "I believe we should prepare for worst-case scenarios before they happen. We must hope that hard times do not come or last. But we must brace ourselves for the worst. " Kotak also advocated for a long-term strategic focus from Indian companies, claiming that the country had "financialized too soon" and that businesses should prioritize investments and long-term competitiveness over quick stock market profits.
