Thousands Attend Pranay Perumalla's Funeral in Miryalguda September 17, 2018 10:56
Thousands from across Telugu states flocked in the streets of Miryalguda in Telangana on Sunday for the funeral procession of Pranay Perumalla amid cries of "Pranay Amar Rahe - Jai Bhim!." The town bore witness to Dalit rage and grief, and hundreds of youths were part of the funeral procession that commenced from Pranay's home in Muthireddy Kunta and went around the town before the funeral took place at the Roman Catholic burial ground near his house. The 24-year-old Pranay was murdered on September 14 outside Miryalaguda Jyothi Hospital by an unknown assailant in what is alleged to be a caste killing, for wedding Amrutha, a woman from a forward caste community. The police department is still probing the case. Thousands of youth gathered to express their solidarity and demanding justice. The funeral was attended by those from other faiths too, who expressed their solidarity for the Dalit cause. The crowd, which consisted of a large number of youngsters, were likewise seen actively using social media and broadcasting proceedings with the assist of Facebook lives. "Let the world see the ugly face of casteism," said one youngster. Students from Kakatiya and Osmania University, Dalits, human rights activists were all in attendance, and so were the residents of Miryalaguda, who are thus far to recover from the brazen murder. Maharashtra local court has issued an arrest warrant against N Chandrababu Naidu, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, and 15 others in a 2010 case related to an agitation by them over the Babli project across river Godavari.The judicial first class judge of Dharmabad in Nanded district, N R Gajbhiye, issued the order, directing police to apprehend all the accused and produce them in the court by September 21.Then in the opposition in the united Andhra Pradesh, Naidu and others had been arrested and lodged in Pune jail in connection with the agitation staged by them near the Babli project site in Maharashtra, opposing it on the ground that it would affect the people downstream. The Supreme Court on Wednesday extended the house arrest of five rights activists who were arrested in connection with the Bhima-Koregaon violence case till September 17.A Bench consisting Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A.M. Khanwilkar and D.Y. Chandrachud adjourned the hearing on the plea filed by historian Romila Thapar and four others to September 17 after it was submitted that Abhishek Manu Singhvi, a senior advocate, who is representing the petitioners, was busy in another court.Earlier, Singhvi appeared before the Bench and submitted that the hearing on Thapar's plea be conducted after 12 noon as he has to appear in another matter.The court was hearing the plea filed against the apprehension of the rights activists - Arun Ferreira, Varavara Rao, Sudha Bharadwaj, Vernon Gonsalves, and Gautam Navlakha - in the case.Pune police had arrested the five activists on August 28 in connection with an FIR (First Information Report) lodged following a conclave - 'Elgaar Parishad' - held on December 31 earlier this year that they claim had later triggered violence at Bhima-Koregaon.The apex court on August 29, ordered the house arrest of the activists, saying "dissent is the safety valve of democracy."By Sowmya Sangam

An earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale hit parts of Assam, Meghalaya, Bihar, and West Bengal on September 12, an India Meteorological Department official said.Around the same time, a mild earthquake was felt at Jammu and Kashmir. The quake measured 4.6 on the Richter scale and occurred at 5.15 in the morning. No damage to property or life was reported. The epicenter of the quake was located 199 km north of Kargil town in the frontier Ladakh region of the state.No casualties have been reported so far from the quakes in the northeast, Bihar and West Bengal, police said.The quake lasted around 15 to 20 seconds and was felt around 10.20 am. The magnitude of the quake was recorded at 5.5 on the Richter scale, according to a report of the Central Seismological Observatory in Shillong.Its epicenter was 2 km north of Kokrajhar town in Assam and at a depth of 10 km, it said.The tremor was felt in six northern districts of West Bengal as well as the metropolis and its surrounding districts.Tremors were also felt in parts of Bangladesh.Further information is awaited.By Sowmya Sangam

An overcrowded state-run bus swerved off the road and hurtled down the slope into a valley in Jagtial district, Telangana Tuesday, killing 57 people and injuring about 30 others in one of the worst highway calamities in the state, police said.The deceased included 36 women and five children. Some of the victims were pilgrims returning to Jagtial from the temple town of Kondagattu after offering prayers at the famous Hanuman temple. The accident involving the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) bus took place on the ghat section of the road near Shanivarapet village, around 200 km from state capital Hyderabad. Jagtial Superintendent of Police Sindhu Sharma told PTI over the phone "57 persons died in the accident. Around 30 others, who were injured, are undergoing treatment in different hospitals." More than 90 people were traveling in the bus and were proceeding to Jagtial town when the mishap occurred around 11 a.m., police said. The driver of the bus was among the deceased. "The bus accident in Telanganas Jagtial district is shocking beyond words. Anguished by the loss of lives. My thoughts and solidarity with the bereaved families. More than 40 people were killed and several others were injured after a state-run road transport corporation bus overturned and fell into a valley in Telangana's Jagitial district on Tuesday morning. Many of the injured can be seen bleeding, even as locals rushed to the spot to help."The bus is a local one from Jagitial depot...totally overloaded. The bus was coming from Shanivarampet to Jagitial. After reaching Kondagattu, which is a ghat road, the bus lost control and fell down, killing 23 persons on the spot. The bus had more than 50 passengers. The incident took place at 11.30 am. We were all at Collectorate and rushed immediately and rescued many by 12.15 pm," said Jagitial Revenue Divisional Officer G Narendhar."The survivors say that they were petrified and yelling in panic after the bus was about to fall. We suspect that the bus' brakes failed," he added.The injured have been rushed to government hospitals in Jagtial and Karimnagar. The incident took place at the Kondagattu Ghat Road, as a bus full of pilgrims was returning to Jagtial town from the famous temple in the district. Officials say that the bus could have skid before it fell. According to reports, the brakes of the bus failed, following which it turned turtle. Hyderabad Police detained former Member of Legislature (MLA) T. Jayaprakash Reddy alias Jagga Reddy in a lawsuit relating to fraudulently obtaining passports here on Monday.According to police sources, Jagga Reddy was taken into custody on Monday morning and was being questioned. "We got information that Jagga Reddy trafficked three persons from Hyderabad to America using passports secured on the names of his wife, daughter, and son," a police officer associated with the investigation of the case said.The police officials recalled that the then legislators Soyam Bapurao and Kasipeta Lingaiah were arrested on similar charges about 14 years ago.According to police sources, American government officials have the data of illegal immigrants from India. While reportedly analyzing the data they stumbled upon details of the three persons, who managed to enter America with the passports acquired with fictitious data. On learning about it, Hyderabad Commissioner's Task Force officials picked up Jagga Reddy and interrogated him for several hours.It is learned that Task Force detectives recovered documents suggesting that some passports in the names of Jagga Reddy's family members were acquired by presenting forged documents.The investigators are verifying on confirmed reports that two women and one male person flew to America in 2004 along with Jagga Reddy.Even so, while these three persons stayed back in the United States, Jagga Reddy had returned to Hyderabad eventually.Sources said Jagga Reddy would be handed over to North Zone police of Hyderabad for further investigation on these charges against him.When contacted, North Zone DCP B. Sumathi confirmed that the former Congress Whip was taken into custody. She said he also misused his official position to obtain passports and visas to the United States.Sumathi said none of his 'original' family members had obtained passports."He obtained the passport by submitting forged documents and trafficked them to America," she said. At least 19 children, including eight girls, have been rescued from an unregistered orphanage in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua district during a raid, officials said Saturday. The civil administration and police conducted the raid Friday after some children complained that they were being "harassed and tortured" at the facility run by a pastor from Kerala.Antony Thomas has been arrested and booked under the POSCO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses) Act in this connection, they said. Thomas, however, has denied all charges of any wrongdoing at the center."A total of 21 children are staying at the asylum. Two of them have gone to their native place - Pathankot (Punjab) - to attend a marriage," he told reporters before being whisked away by police.The children, aged 5 to 16, have been shifted to government-run Bal Ashram and Nari Niketan, the officials said, adding they belong to different parts of Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu. Senior Superintendent of Police, Kathua, Shridhar Patil said, "The rescue operation was conducted based on a complaint and further investigation is on."He said the orphanage was operating for several years. It was linked to a Non-Government Organization which, however, de-linked it a few days ago."Officials seized some items from the orphanage. The rescued children are being given medical treatment and counseling," he said.He said the pastor's wife has gone to Kerala in view of the floods there and will return in a few days.Assistant Commissioner Revenue, Kathua, Jitender Mishra, who led the joint raid, said the raid was conducted on the directions of the Kathua deputy commissioner after he received several complaints alleging the children were being "harassed and tortured" at the orphanage. Family members of the children are being contacted, he said.Thomas failed to produce any document for running the center during the raid, Mishra said, adding the motive behind operating the facility is under investigation. The Congress will organize a nationwide shutdown on September 10 over rising petroleum prices, parties leaders announced Thursday and asked other opposition parties and civil society groups to join their objection against the government.
