Over years of blockbusters and duds, fireworks and fizzes, Bollywood has learned that showbiz is all about evolving with time — that change is the only constant thing that drives box-office bankability and to engage minds and monetize attention, it must keep reinventing itself across genres, tastes and budgetary divides.

Although big-budget mainstream still adheres to the age-old formula of providing old wine in new bottle and banking overtly on stars to push it through, the focus is now on low to medium budget films to regale the urban multiplex audience at large.

Setting new trends in Indian cinema, Bollywood is all set to dish out five crossover entertainers that will tackle subjects never before seen on the Hindi screen. And no, these films aren't a desperate and deliberate step to reinvent Indian cinema but merely an attempt to serve something fresh to its starved audience. The new bag of tricks is quite an assorted one, too.

From a movie on roller skating to porn writing to monster horror jostling for box-office attention with a lady detective and a superstar in animation avatar, the audience are in for a treat this year. But in an industry where every filmmaker eternally insists his film is 'different', it would be interesting to see if these films manage to actually make a difference.

That said, Bollywood's idea of entertainment is definitely in for a spin. We check out the five avant-garde releases of 2014 that might augur new trends in Bollywood.
