While India successfully launches Mission Mars in its first attempt and boasting about it, the nation still needs to deal with the riddled superficial stuff, it seems. Especially States like Chhattisgarh and
Jharkhand, where decades old conflicts between the Maoists and the state help mushroom the tribal societies associated with misogynistic violence. One of the deadly crimes in the area is witch hunt.

People name and blame women, mostly widowers, unmarried, and childless for practicing black magic and torture them to the hell.

Between 2001 and 2013, there were 1,500 witch trials here and 210 associated murders.

The Indian government's latest figures suggest that, between 2000 and 2012, some 2,100 people, mostly women, were killed across the country after being accused of practicing witchcraft. But rights groups suggest the number could be higher as many of the victims' families refuse to lodge an official complaint and some deaths simply go unreported.

When the village well dries, they generally target the woman who last used it. Other reasons including family member falling sick and natural calamities like crop failure. Illiteracy and the caste consciousness are the major reasons behind all these crimes, officials said.

Social ostracism, beating to faint, parading naked, feeding excreta, and even lynching people on excretion are common punishments for the so called witches.

Now with the little development or improvement done by the Government and by the right activists since decades, all we can do is hope their ancestral beliefs will change with the time.
