If Vijay succeeds in Tamil Nadu in 2026, he will achieve something no other movie star has accomplished in almost five decades: he will become the first actor-turned Chief Minister since M. G. Ramachandran transformed politics in 1977. The last time cinema had a direct influence on Fort St George was when MGR won the 1977 Assembly elections, leading Tamil Nadu for ten years until his passing in 1987. He turned his fan loyalty into a powerful political system, made welfare an emotional promise to voters, and fundamentally changed the relationship between personality and policy in the state. No actor has been able to surpass that crucial electoral milestone since then, despite numerous efforts and large fan bases. Jayalalithaa, despite being a prominent movie star, reached the position of Chief Minister by taking over and eventually dominating MGR's established AIADMK rather than founding her own political movement. Early results from the 2026 Assembly elections indicate that Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, a party that is just two years old, is expected to win between 100 and 118 seats. Even at the lower end, this positions Vijay among the top players in state politics; at the higher end, it brings him close to the 118 seats required for a majority in the 234-member House.
Vijay started restructuring his fan organization as early as 2009, when his numerous clubs were officially organized as Vijay Makkal Iyakkam. Initially set up as a network for welfare and services, the group gradually built local connections through assistance in relief efforts, educational support, and community interventions. In 2011, it openly supported the AIADMK-led coalition, marking Vijay's first clear political partnership and testing whether his star power could influence votes. Throughout the late 2010s and early 2020s, his public appearances focused on films began to take on more political significance. His opposition to the Citizenship Amendment Act in 2019 showed that he was willing to speak out on issues beyond just cinema. Events like audio launches, fan gatherings, and charity functions increasingly addressed topics such as exam pressure, youth unemployment, corruption, and governance—subjects that resonated with first-time voters and urban dreamers. Evidence of his organizational strength emerged even before the party was officially launched. In the 2021 local elections, candidates from Vijay Makkal Iyakkam secured the majority of seats they contested, proving that the network could turn popularity into votes, not just large audiences.
When Vijay decided to take a big step in February 2024 by starting Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, he did it with remarkable focus. TVK planned to participate in the 2026 Assembly election independently, turn down pre-election partnerships, and present itself as a fresh choice against the DMK-AIADMK power struggle. Following this announcement, he revealed that he would retire from acting, concluding a 30-year career with about 70 films. The message was clear: this was serious business. Over the next two years, TVK transformed a casual fan-support network into an official party, establishing district committees, local units, and grassroots teams, while sharpening its focus on education, job creation, fighting corruption, and accountability within institutions. Vijay was portrayed not as a conventional fiery speaker, but as a listener, engaging through social media town halls and carefully organized public events. The journey had its challenges. A deadly stampede at a TVK-related event in Karur in 2025 marked Vijay's first significant challenge as a political figure, raising concerns about organizational order and responsibility.
His reaction—thoughtful, open, and corrective—became an early sign of how he might manage larger governance scrutiny. Currently, the numbers indicate that his risk has paid off. Even without a clear majority, getting around 110 seats would place Vijay in a crucial position for forming the government, either as chief minister or as a key player. His rejection of pre-election partnerships means that any agreements made after the election will be closely examined for consistency with his anti-establishment message. The structural effects are already noticeable. With TVK positioned as a strong force alongside a DMK-led alliance and a weakened but still present AIADMK, Tamil Nadu is facing its most credible three-way competition since the shift that occurred after MGR's rise.
Smaller parties, which have usually relied on partnering with one of the two major Dravidian parties, now see a third possible option. The similarities with MGR are unavoidable but not entirely accurate. While MGR capitalized on a significant division and a populist wave focused on welfare, Vijay's appeal stems from generational concerns, weariness with governance, and the promise of a clean shift. Whether this leads to political power or simply reshapes the political landscape, the situation in 2026 has already changed the dynamics of Tamil Nadu politics. Vijay could either become the first actor to enter Fort St George in almost fifty years or demonstrate that such an event is now a possibility, though still incomplete.
