Cricketer MS Dhoni is not good enough to be India's Test captain, according to former Australia captain Ian Chappell. He says that Dhoni is past his prime when it comes to captaincy. And it would do good to the Indian cricket team to hand over the reins to Virat Kohli.
During an exclusive interview Chappell said that it was time for MS Dhoni to go and bring in Kohli as the captain.
Chappell feels that Dhoni is not the right person to lead the team in Test cricket. Though he says that for shorter-version of the game Dhoni is a good captain. There shouldn't be any problem in making Virat Kohli the captain.
According to Chappell, at present India needs fresh ideas to lead the team. But, Chappell feels Indian selectors are not ruthless and shy from taking hard decisions.
The former Australia captain sighted Australian selectors known for their ruthless quality. In India the selectors wait for the captain to retire before appointing a new captain.
Had Dhoni been an Australian captain he would have been replaced India lost 4-0 to England and Australia, said Chappell. Dhoni did nothing to inspire the Indian team, he added.
If a team goes down fighting then there is nothing wrong in loosing matches. However, Chappell feels that Dhoni did not make efforts and has lost his usefulness as captain. So it's time for him to go as Test captain.
According to Chappell, at 27 years Kohli is just at the right age for captaincy. He feels that Kohli has a very strong character and is confident as a cricketer. So captaincy will not affect his game. It would give hime four to five years to peak his game. There's no point giving captaincy at 32-33 when he's at the peak, said Chappell.
The former Australian captain feels the biggest issue for the Indian team lies in its selection. He feels Stuart Binny should not have been playing in the first Test against England. Instead, Ashwin would have been a better choice as he can bat as well as bowl. While Binny cannot bowl and he comes for bating at number eight.
