The saga of who leads the Mumbai Indians (MI) continues, as former Indian player Kris Srikkanth has suggested that captain Hardik Pandya should give the leadership role to Suryakumar Yadav. Despite having one of the best teams on paper, MI last captured the IPL trophy in 2020 while Rohit Sharma was in charge. Hardik returned to MI in 2024 through a significant trade from Gujarat Titans, which he guided to victory in their first season in 2022. However, after they exited in the playoffs in 2025, the push for a change in leadership has grown stronger as the 2026 season approaches. Still, the franchise quickly named him captain for that year, leading to rumors about potential issues between Hardik and previous captain Rohit Sharma. Fans criticized the management's choice after MI placed last in the standings in 2024. Although the team made progress by reaching the playoffs in 2025, their ongoing wait for a trophy has kept the discussion about leadership ongoing as they enter the new season.
In a recent statement on his YouTube channel, Srikkanth called on the team management, including Hardik, Rohit, and Surya, to unite and create a clear plan for the future. He described the leadership dilemma as unusual, highlighting that two captains who have won the World Cup - Rohit and Suryakumar - are currently playing under Hardik. "They need to gather once more - the franchise owners and the team management with Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, and Hardik Pandya, and fix this issue. They ought to let Surya lead this year to see if fortunes change. Appointing Surya as captain can always happen at any time; there is no need for an announcement now. It's quite a peculiar situation. Hardik Pandya is an effective captain. However, considering that there are two World Cup-winning captains playing under him, there seems to be some internal regulation that needs to be addressed. From an outside perspective, Suryakumar Yadav should be the clear choice. But this might relate to the franchise's internal policies," stated Srikkanth.
The former BCCI selector also urged Hardik to willingly pass the captaincy to Suryakumar Yadav, who recently guided India to victory in the 2026 T20 World Cup with a strong performance. "This is a puzzling situation since Hardik played under Rohit and Surya to help India secure the World Cup. Alternatively, Hardik should take the initiative and step back from the captaincy, allowing Surya to take charge. If Hardik suggests this to the management, it could clear things up. He should express, 'Let Surya lead, and I will provide support. ' This is one way to resolve the matter," Srikkanth clarified.
