Gautam Gambhir, the head coach of the Indian men's cricket team, is reportedly returning to India from England due to an urgent medical situation involving his family just days ahead of the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy, scheduled to begin on June 20. As reported by Sportstar, his mother, Seema, has experienced a cardiac arrest and is presently in Intensive Care. Gambhir had joined the team in England on June 7, marking his fourth Test series as head coach. He reportedly missed a training session on June 12 and is no longer with the team. While the exact timing of his return is not confirmed, some sources suggest he may be back by the following week. His departure coincides with the day of an intra-squad match for India, which is expected to feature players from the senior and India ‘A’ teams and is set to be played behind closed doors in Leeds, meaning it will not be televised or streamed, and a scorecard may not be available.
In his absence, assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate will oversee the match, with support from bowling coach Morne Morkel and batting coach Sitanshu Kotak. This match serves as the final opportunity for several players who are new to red-ball cricket, having just transitioned from the IPL. The opening Test will take place at Headingley starting next Friday. Prior to his departure, Gambhir delivered an inspiring motivational address to his team, encouraging them to adapt to the departures of notable players such as Virat Kohli, Ravichandran Ashwin, and former captain Rohit Sharma. In a video released by the BCCI before he left, Gambhir emphasized, “There are two perspectives we can take on this team. On one hand, we are missing our three most seasoned players; on the other, we have an incredible chance to achieve something extraordinary.”
He further expressed, “Looking at this group, I see tremendous hunger, passion, and dedication to accomplish something notable… If we’re willing to make sacrifices, step outside our comfort zones, and commit to fighting—not just every day, but during every session, hour, and ball—we can create lasting memories during this tour. Let’s begin that journey today. Enjoy representing your country, as there is no greater honor.”
