The Delhi government has been placed under President's Rule, after over two days following the resignation of Arvind Kejriwal as Delhi chief minister. Kejriwal resigned over his inability to pass the Jan Lokpal bill in the Delhi assembly.
President Pranab Mukherjee signed the advice for central rule in Delhi from the Union Cabinet this morning.
The Jan Lokpal bill was the most crucial agenda of the AAP and Kejriwal had vowed to resign if his bill gets stalled. And true to his words, the AAP chief resigned when his government failed to fall the bill in the assembly.
Kejriwal, in his resignation letter, had recommended dissolution of the assembly and fresh elections in Delhi. However, Delhi Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung in his report to the Centre strongly suggested that the Delhi assembly be placed under suspended animation.
With President's rule being imposed on Delhi, the BJP, being the party with largest number of MPs in the assembly, will get another opportunity to form an alliance and come to power in the capital.
In the 70-member Delhi assembly, the BJP and Shiromani Akali Dal together have 32 Mps. But for now, BJP has favoured fresh election. AAP has 27 MPs while the Congress holds 8 seats in the Delhi assembly.
