The palatial Hotel Ashok you see in the image is now home to hundreds of Parliamentarians.
The recently over Lok Sabha 2014 elections might have earned fresh seats for many candidates in the Parliament. But at the same time, the new responsibility has rendered them homeless. Ask how?
Well, a fresh lot of as many as 117 newly-elected Lok Sabha MPs and soon-to-be-ministers are left without an accommodation as many outgoing ministers and MPs who are not a part of the new Lok Sabha are yet to vacate their bungalows.
Looking at the crisis, the urban development ministry has booked rooms for the new lot at the Ashok Hotel in New Delhi's Chanakyapuri area. Most of the MPs have checked in on 'regular' rooms on May 17 which cost around Rs 9,000 per night.
"The MPs are given single-bed regular rooms with attached bathroom and a fridge. There is a LCD TV also in the room," the official said. By now, the MPs have already footed big bills running into lakhs during their 10-day stay.
Prominent BJP leaders put up at the hotel include Army chief V.K. Singh and Bhojpuri filmstar Manoj Tiwari.
Rashtriya Lok Samata Party's Upendra Kushwaha and Apna Dal's Anupriya Patel have also been lodged at the hotel.
Besides the Ashok Hotel, transit accommodations have been provided to the newly elected MPs across state bhawans.
As many as 180 rooms have been earmarked for the newly-elected MPs in ITDC-run hotels. 240 rooms have been offered in the state bhawans and the guest houses of the Directorate of Estates, the Ministry of Urban Development.
All the 330 newly-elected MPs in the current Lok Sabha will be provided with permanent accommodation after the constitution of the Lok Sabha Housing Committee.
MPs and Union ministers who were not re-elected for the 16th Lok Sabha, are entitled to retain their existing government accommodation for not more than a month from the date of dissolution of the 15th Lok Sabha.
The Ashok Hotel has round-the-clock security with guards patrolling the floors. The access to these floors has been restricted.
