Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi not only swept the country elections, but also his Varanasi Lok Sabha seat with a massive mandate this 16th Lok Sabha elections. And now it's payback time for the grateful MP.

"Acche din" might still be a far-fetched reality for the country, but not for Varanasi which is all set for a major overhaul. That's right!

Living up to his promise to make Varanasi the hub of Indian culture and heritage, even while preserving its “pauranik swaroop”, Modi has designed an extensive makeover blueprint for the “pilgrimage rejuvenation” and “spiritual augmentation”.

Narendra Modi, a methodist and meticulous man by nature, has already launched his mission and has roped in hundreds of professionals and consultants to assist him. Off all, he has hired tech giant Google to help him identify and map the tourism hotspots in and around the city.

Reports the Economic Times: "Among those said to be working on the project is Google, apart from professionals and consultants engaged in identifying tourism hotspots in and around Varanasi, beautification, landscaping, mapping the city for better movement and security."

From the polluted Ganga to crumbling heritage to congested traffic and the all-pervasive filth, Varanasi is beleaguered by a wad of problems. You will be shocked to know that Varanasi generates a humungous 400 MLD of sewage, with only three sewage treatment plants that handle only 102 MLD.

Needless to say, Varanasi being Prime Minister Modi's constituency, the BJP government has come up with a massive development scheme for the city.

As expected, in its maiden budget, the Modi government announced a lion's share of funds, Rs 6,300-plus crore 'Namami Ganga' plan. While Rs 2037 crore will be spent on rejuvenating the river, a cool Rs 4200 crore will be used to develop a navigation corridor in the next six years.

Then there is a Rs 100 crore project for ghat development and waterfront beautification. The government has also announced a 'NRI Ganga fund' to help drive fund collection, the money from which will be spent on 'special projects'.

Modi seems keen on reviving the lost glory of the ancient spiritual hub. Named 'Kashi Vision', ahis scheme of things will include everything, from clean-up drives to recalibrating traffic plans, erecting an auditorium and a music academy for "resident musicians" and more.

We are yet to have a word on what role would Google or Facebook consultants play in executing Modi's “Kashi Vision”, but given his fetish for social media, it's a no-brainer that social media and communication strategies will be a major part of his plan.
