Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had given a call for clean India at his Independence Day speech. Taking cue from his speech for a 'Clean India' mission, the local authorities in Delhi launched a sanitation drive.
The new sanitation drive bars people from urinating in public or littering the streets. Anyone caught in these act will be fined, just like in western countries.
North Delhi Corporation Mayor Yogender Chandolia stated that sanitation workers clean the area each morning but shopkeepers dirty them around 9.30 am. In future, shopkeepers would be warned by the workers and if they are caught again a fine of up to Rs.1,000 will be imposed, added Chandolia.
On Independence Day, Narendra Modi had laid emphasis on the importance of cleanliness in everyday life. Modi had pointed out that he wanted every village and every city in India to launch a cleanliness drive.
Chandolia said that people urinating outside public urinals in Delhi will be fined.
Sanitation inspectors would be deployed on the field and keep an eye on defaulters. Offenders will be charged a fine of Rs.200, which may even increase to Rs.1,000, according to Chandolia.
The sanitation campaign is a great step forward. Due to few irresponsible citizens the entire city has turned into one giant urinal. Due to people urinating in public, walking on footpaths is almost impossible, said a marketing professional based in Delhi. He hopes the sanitation drive is implemented properly and continues.
Authorities of the east and south corporations also have plans of launching similar cleanliness drives soon.
