43-year-old Indian-origin British MP Seema Malhotra has been appointed as the shadow chief secretary of Treasury by the newly elected Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn. Malhotra became MP from the London seat of Feltham and Heston in 2011 in a by-election following the death of Alan Keen (Conservative).

During August 2014, she was appointed in the newly-created role of shadow minister for preventing the violence against women and girls by the then Labour leader Ed Miliband. She is also the shadow chancellor John McDonnell's number two in the shadow Treasury team. Hammersmith-born Seema has earlier worked in business consultancy, including for the corporate giant PwC, before entering the parliament.

She founded the Fabian Women’s Network and was a previous National Chair of the Young Fabians.

Extreme left-wing MP Jeremy Corbyn was elected as the leader of Britain’s main Opposition Labour Party with a historic victory by gaining 2,51,417 or 59.5 per cent of first preference votes, which is 40 per cent more than his nearest rival Andy Burnham. Yvette Cooper was third on 17 per cent and Liz Kendall a distant fourth with 4.5 per cent of the votes.
