The US Supreme Court has threw out a 2013 Texas abortion law in a victory to supporters of abortion rights. The law was imposing restrictive regulations on the procedure.
According to the Texas abortion law, doctors who perform abortions to have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals and clinics to maintain hospital-like conditions. Since 2007, the key decision is the first major abortion ruling.Justice Stephen Breyer said that, "There was no significant health-related problem that the new law helped to cure." "We agree with the District Court that the surgical-center requirement, like the admitting-privileges requirement, provides few, if any, health benefits for women, poses a substantial obstacle to women seeking abortions, and constitutes an "undue burden" on their constitutional right to do so."
"When a State severely limits access to safe and legal procedures, women in desperate circumstances may resort to unlicensed rogue practitioners, faute de mieux, at great risk to their health and safety," said Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg who joined Breyer's opinion.
The Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton said that, "SCOTUS's decision is a victory for women in Texas and across America. Safe abortion should be a right not just on paper, but in reality.”
President Barack Obama said he is "pleased" by the ruling. "We remain strongly committed to the protection of women's health, including protecting a woman's access to safe, affordable health care and her right to determine her own future,” the President said.
