The Canadian singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen, has died at the age of 82. The rock music's man of letters was  known best for his haunting hit song Hallelujah.

A statement on the Facebook page said that, "It is with profound sorrow we report that legendary poet, songwriter and artist, Leonard Cohen has passed away."  "We have lost one of music's most revered and prolific visionaries."

There was no further details provided in the statement about Cohen's death . Cohen's representatives could not immediately be reached for comment. A memorial was planned in Los Angeles, it added. Cohen had lived for many years in Los Angeles.

He influenced several musicians and won many honors, including the Order of Canada and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

He sang about religion, which included references to the Jewish traditions and Jesus Christ, as well as love and sex, regret, political upheaval, and what he once called the search for "a kind of balance in the chaos of existence".
