
Canada needs to do more for refugees in order to resettle and also protect the displaced people all across the world. Canada has opened up its political will to help the refugees, but much more need to be done for the refugees in order to address the growing crisis all around the world, said the United Nations refugee agency’s representative to Canada.
On the World Refugee Day, representative of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Jean-Nicolas Beuze said that Canada has done its fair share in resettling refugees, especially with more recent efforts to welcome the Syrian refugees.
“Canada did extremely well last year by resettling many, mainly Syrian, refugees,” Beuze said on Tuesday, noting that refugees have seen “huge support” from the local community and faith-based organizations.
Earlier in this year, the UNHCR has praised Canada for resettling nearly 46,700 refugees in the year 2016. According to the UNHCR’s latest global trends report, more than 97,000 people who are recognized by the UN as refugees were residing in Canada at the end of 2016.
As per the breakdown of Ottawa’s immigration plan for the year 2017, the 9,000 resettlements to include 7,500 government-assisted refugees and also 1,500 people admitted through the blended program which combines government and private sponsorships. Ottawa also plans to resettle the 16,000 privately-sponsored refugees in this year.
UNHCR is urging the international community for an action, it is not just to help the agency to resettle and protect displaced people, but also to address the in depth causes of the refugee crisis.
This id the third consecutive year for Turkey, as it hosted the largest number of refugees worldwide, nearly 2.9 million, mainly from the neighbouring Syria. The other two top refugee hosting countries were Pakistan and Lebanon, with 1.4 million and 1 million people respectively.
