New refugee arrivals, have established a trend of illegal crossings from US border to Canada and authorities do not expect that refugees surge from US to Canada will cease soon.
“At the heart of it all, is this real, very deep fear. Fear for their lives. Fear for persecution. Whether it’s in their home country or the United States, or wherever else they might be coming from,” said Rita Chahal, the Executive Director of Manitoba Interfaith Immigration Council, largest refugee resettlement organization in the Manitoba.
According to the records of Canadian Border Services Agency, 3,461 people have been caught near the border of Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) from the month of January to the end of May. Also in the month of May, authorities have reported the first death relating to illegal crossing of border, a 57-year-old Ghana woman is believed to have died of the hypothermia during her journey.
The trend of illegal crossings is an increasingly discussed agreement: the agreement of Safe Third Country between the United States and Canada require the refugees to apply for asylum in the first country whichever they land. But the agreement does not take effect if the refugees cross the border illegally.
An official from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement in the United States has confirmed that, they have seen a steady raise of deportations in the recent months.
In the case of Somali population, Minnesota remains as the largest home for Somali community in the United States. The ICE official said that from 1st October, 2016, to 17th June, 2017, 398 Somalis were deported. In the contrast, 198 Somalis have been deported during the previous fiscal year.
Authorities have noted that the change is not only due to policy changes under the Trump administration, but stated that the changes in countries own political environments may also be contributing to the increase.
