Indian American Congressmen Win Primaries in California

Indian American Congressmen Ami Bera and Ro Khanna have won their respective primaries in California elections held on June 5 and will run for the Congressional elections on November 6.

The three other Indian Americans running for Congress in New Jersey, Hirsh Singh, Goutam Jois and Peter Jacob lost in the primary elections.

New Jersey has an ample population of Indian American's.

Bera, a three-time Congressman from Seventh Congressional District of California bagged more than 51 per cent of votes in the primary elections whereas his nearest rival Andrew Grant from the Republican party received 32.9 per cent of the votes.

Khanna, received an overwhelming 58.9 per cent votes in the open primary for the 19th Congressional District of California who entered the House of Representatives for the initial time in 2017. His nearest rival Ron Cohen from the republican party received 25 per cent of the votes.

Both Bera and Khanna are expected to win Congressional elections in November, coming from a strong Democratic bastion.

"Despite running an exciting insurgent campaign, Vivek Viswanathan came up short in his bid for California State Treasurer," said Gautam Raghavan of the recently formed Impact Project, which is keeping track of some 80 Indian Americans running nationwide this election season.

Vivek Vishwanathan received 12.8 per cent of votes whereas Fiona Ma won 43.3 per cent of votes.

Indian Amercian techie Shubham Goel received 0.1 per cent of votes in the primary for the Governor of California.
