A woman who gave a part of her liver to her husband passed away a few days after he died following a transplant surgery, which led the Maharashtra health department to notify a private hospital in Pune, according to an official. The Sahyadri Hospital has been instructed to provide all information related to the transplant process by Monday, stated Dr Nagnath Yempalle, Deputy Director of Health Services, on Sunday. "We have sent a notice to the hospital asking for information about both the recipient and the donor, their video recordings, and the treatment they received. The hospital must submit all the details by 10 am on Monday," he explained. The patient, known as Bapu Komkar, and his wife Kamini, who donated part of her liver, had their surgeries on August 15 at the hospital. After the transplant surgery, Bapu Komkar’s condition worsened, resulting in his death on August 17. Kamini developed an infection on August 21 and died while being treated.

Family members have claimed medical negligence and are calling for an investigation into the deaths. The hospital claimed that the surgeries were performed according to standard medical guidelines. "We are fully cooperating with the investigation. We are dedicated to providing all necessary information and assistance to ensure a complete review of this case," the hospital said in a statement, acknowledging receipt of the notice. They mentioned that the patient (Bapu Komkar) had many complications and was considered high-risk. "We express our heartfelt condolences to the Komkar family during this difficult time. A living donor liver transplant is a very complex procedure, and in this situation, the patient was high-risk with various complications," it continued. The hospital also stated that the family and the donor received complete information about the risks of surgery beforehand.

"The surgeries were conducted following standard medical protocols. Sadly, the recipient experienced cardiogenic shock after the transplant and could not be saved despite all efforts," it mentioned. Regarding Kamini Komkar's health, the hospital noted that she initially improved but later faced septic shock and multi-organ failure, which could not be managed even with advanced treatments. "We are dedicated to providing the best care possible and offer our full support to the grieving family during this heartbreaking time," the statement concluded.
