The Indian Railways is preparing to introduce a number of changes that focus on enhancing operations, making ticketing clearer, and improving the movement of freight, as stated by Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Tuesday while presenting the government's future plans. During a press briefing earlier in the day, the Railway Minister mentioned that approximately five major reforms will be revealed soon as part of a larger plan to modernize the railway system and enhance services for travelers. While discussing the upcoming changes, Vaishnaw indicated that confirmed train tickets that are cancelled less than eight hours before the train leaves will not be eligible for refunds anymore. This step is part of a set of changes aimed at making ticket cancellation rules stricter, ensuring clarity in the booking system, and minimizing last-minute cancellations that can disrupt seat availability for travelers. Some of the suggested changes include reforms related to transporting salt and cars, as well as initiatives to improve the standards of railway construction work. The government is also prioritizing the enhancement of flexibility for passengers regarding changing their train boarding locations.
With the new ticketing rules, passengers will have the option to alter their boarding station up to 30 minutes prior to the train's departure. Additionally, Aadhaar-based OTP authentication has been introduced for Tatkal bookings to enhance verification and prevent misuse. Authorities have also put anti-bot systems in place on the ticketing website, resulting in the deactivation of nearly thirty million suspicious or inactive user accounts. Officials claim that these reforms are meant to boost efficiency, improve passenger convenience, and address irregularities in the railway booking process.
