US President Donald Trump has mentioned that discussions are happening with what he considers a "new and more reasonable" leadership in Iran. However, he cautioned that there will be serious consequences if an agreement isn't reached quickly. In a message on Truth Social, Trump remarked, "The United States is engaged in serious talks with A NEW, AND MORE REASONABLE, REGIME to conclude our Military Activities in Iran. " He further stated that "significant progress has been made" during the negotiations and expressed optimism about a potential deal. Nonetheless, the President warned about the Strait of Hormuz, stating that if the route isn't “immediately ‘Open for Business,’” the United States would increase its military actions. Trump indicated that Washington would "destroy and completely obliterate all of their Electric Generating Plants, Oil Wells and Kharg Island (and possibly all desalinization plants! )" if agreements are not fulfilled.
He referred to the potential military response as payback for American losses, mentioning what he termed Iran’s “47 year ‘Reign of Terror. ’” These comments were made after Iran dismissed the US proposals delivered through mediators during the ongoing conflict, labeling them unrealistic and biased. Esmaeil Baghaei, a spokesperson for the foreign ministry, noted that the suggestions given to Tehran were mainly unacceptable. "The proposals delivered to Iran have mostly been ‘unrealistic, unreasonable and excessive,’” he remarked, according to Al Arabiya News. Previously, Trump had asserted that the US-Israel conflict had resulted in regime change in Iran, even while affirming that he would "make a deal" with the Iranians.
"I think we'll reach an agreement with them, I’m quite sure. . . but we've seen regime change," Trump shared with reporters on Air Force One, pointing to the number of Iranian officials eliminated in the month-long conflict. "We are engaging with different individuals than anyone has dealt with in the past. It's an entirely new group. So I would call that regime change," Trump stated. Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of the late supreme leader Ali Khamenei, who died in an airstrike at the war's onset on February 28, was chosen to become the country’s third supreme leader since the 1979 Islamic revolution. Since the conflict began with US-Israeli attacks on Iran, Tehran has effectively closed off the Strait of Hormuz, where around 20 percent of the world’s oil and gas passes through. This closure has caused a surge in global oil prices, but Trump assured that relief is coming through concessions from Iran, starting with the imminent movement of several tankers through the strategic waterway.
