Kangana Ranaut's film 'Emergency' has been postponed again due to opposition from Sikh groups. The actor-turned-MP announced the delay, stating that it's because the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) is still processing the certification. The film's release, which was initially set for September 6, has been indefinitely postponed as the legal battle between the filmmakers and the authorities continues without a favourable outcome.
The film, set in 1975, explores a controversial 21-month period considered one of the darkest eras in Indian democracy. Actress Kangana Ranaut portrays the role of Indira Gandhi, delving into key historical events such as the Emergency, Gandhi's assassination, and the rise of the Khalistan movement under Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale in the 1980s. The ensemble cast includes veteran actors like Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, and Milind Soman. Ranaut, who has also written the screenplay, is expanding her influence as a filmmaker. The movie's release, initially planned for last year, has faced delays due to factors like the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The uncertain release date is further complicated by ongoing certification issues with the CBFC. The film has faced backlash, particularly from the Sikh community, with the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) raising concerns about historical inaccuracies and misrepresentation of the Sikh community. Following the trailer's release, the SGPC and Akal Takht have demanded an immediate ban on the movie.
The producers have been accused of including scenes in the trailer that were perceived as offensive to the Sikh community and hurt their feelings. The SGPC has now contacted the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the CBFC to request a ban on the film.
