Morgan Freeman will star in period drama 'Beautiful Jim Key'. The actor has signed a deal with Cargo Entertainmen, according to the company.
Robert Rodat, screenwriter of "Saving Private Ryan" and "The Patriot" will make his debut as director with this period drama.
The story of this movie revolves around the true story of Dr. William Key, an ex-slave, Civil War veteran and self-taught veterinarian. Dr. Key trains a horse named Beautiful Jim Key to read, spell and do math. But Key is a black, so he's relegated to sideshows in carnivals until he recruited Albert Rogers to be his front man. Rogers was a one-time promoter for P.T. Barnum, who is now a washed up hrunk. Dr. Key and Rogers team up and make Beautiful Jim Key a national sensation. They finally see him as the centerpiece of the 1904 St. Louis Exposition.
Mark Gordon is producing the film along with Lori McCreary of Revelations Entertainment, Morgan Freeman’s production house. Marina Grasic and Rogers Hartmann of Cargo Entertainment are also producing the project.
'Beautiful Jim Key' will be the third collaboration between Rodat and Gordon, who produced "Saving Private Ryan" and "The Patriot".
