If you are in India and are in lifelong live-in relationship, then you are bounded to get marry to your partner.
As per new law framed by Supreme Court, if an unmarried couple is living together under one roof, then they would be considered as married legally and the woman would be entitled to inherit the property after her partner’s death.
A bench of Justice MY Eqbal and Justice Amitava Roy ruled out this law.
"It is well settled that the law presumes in favour of marriage and against concubinage, when a man and woman have cohabited continuously for a long time. However, the presumption can be rebutted by leading unimpeachable evidence. A heavy burden lies on a party who seeks to deprive the relationship of legal origin," the bench said.
The court has passed this order after a family had filed a case against a woman who was not married to their grandfather, but was staying with him for 20 years after his wife’s death. They had approached the court stating that she was not eligible to inherit his property.
