Fatty liver disease is an ailment that affects a significant number of individuals, with obesity being a primary cause. Our modern world's fast-paced lifestyle has led to unhealthy eating habits that do little to promote good health and create an imbalance within the body. There are two types of fatty liver disease: metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease and alcohol-related fatty liver disease. Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease results in liver inflammation and cell damage without being caused by alcohol consumption. However, it does not worsen over time. Conversely, alcohol-related fatty liver disease is much more dangerous and caused by excessive drinking. It can lead to an enlarged liver and severe liver damage if drinking continues. Abstinence is crucial for recovery.
Liver disease may result in symptoms that affect various parts of your body, such as fluid retention. This can cause a buildup of excess water in your abdomen due to inflamed blood vessels in the liver exerting pressure. The accumulation of fluid can lead to swelling and discomfort. Your feet may also be affected with swelling, which can be attributed to gravity or strenuous activity. However, persistent swelling in your feet may indicate liver disease and should not be taken lightly. Furthermore, liver disease can cause swelling in your legs, ankles, and feet due to enlarged veins that block blood flow to the kidneys. This hinders your body's natural process of removing excess fluid. Lastly, a hormonal imbalance caused by liver disease can lead to an enlargement of the chest walls, resulting in a decrease in sexual desire and an increased risk of infertility.
