In the near future, Twitteratis might have to do without hashtags (#) and the @replies as Twitter plans to get rid of these metadata tags for good.

Vivian Schiller, head of Twitter news, during an interview with the Newspaper Association of America's mediaXchange conference in Denver said that at-replies and hashtags are "arcane" or understood by few and hinted that Twitter has all plans to “move them into the background of their service soon.”

Schiller only reiterated what CEO Dick Costolo revealed during his recent earning's ca;;s. However, he hadn't specifically mentioned # and @ symbols then.

Costoloa said, “By bringing the content of Twitter forward and pushing the scaffolding of the language of Twitter to the background, we can increase high-quality interactions and make it more likely that new or casual users will find this service as indispensable as our existing core users do.”

Meanwhile, Schiller backed off from her statement later, denying any statements on phasing out these symbols.

As we all know, getting rid of # and @replies could mean the death of Twitter. Even on Facebook, every photo or post is attached with hashtags, a trend popularized on Twitter.

What do you think - should Twitter put and end to # and @ replies? Let us know your minds here.
