After putting up 15 long years of unflinching legal fight against Kolkata's AMRI Hospital, justice has been finally granted to Dr. Kunal Saha, a U.S. based Indian doctor, who lost his wife Dr. Anuradha Saha to faulty hospital care in 1998.

The Supreme Court of India ordered AMRI Hospital and three of its guilty medical practitioners to hand out a compensation of Rs 5.96 crore  to Saha. Saha is all set to get a whopping compensation of Rs 11.41 crore, “as the court ordered that he was entitled to six per cent interest on the compensation amount from 1999.”

Emphasizing the point that treatment with dignity was "not only a fundamental right" but "also a human right", the apex court asked the Center and the state government to "deal strictly" with doctors, hospitals and nursing homes found to be negligent with patients "who come to them pawning all their money".

Not just that, the court also issued strict directive to the Medical Council of India to strictly scrutinize the acts of doctors.

Apparently, this is the highest compensation ever  ordered by any Indian court in a medical negligence case.
