Speaking for the first time after farmer Gajendra Singh's suicide at the Aam Aadmi Party rally, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal defended himself that though he was at the rally venue, he could not see what was happening.

"The tree was at a distance from the stage. What was happening near the tree wasn't visible from the stage. We could not make an announcement otherwise everyone would have rushed towards that side. Below the tree were some guest teachers and AAP volunteers who saw what was happening. But no one thought that anyone could have committed suicide," he said.

He also accepted that it was his mistake to continue with his speech despite an attempt by Singh to commit suicide. "It was my mistake that I continued with my speech despite the attempt to commit suicide. I'm sorry if people are hurt. I could not sleep because despite me being there, I could not do anything," he said.

However, he also said that the blame game over the issue should stop now as it will not help lessen the issue of farmers. "There should be no blame game. If I speak, people will say I'm doing politics, if I don't, they will question me for not speaking. No one thought that someone would take such a drastic step else I'm sure the police would have helped him," he said.

Delhi government on Thursday announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to farmer Gajendra Singh's family who killed himself at a party rally on Wednesday.

On Thursday, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh blamed AAP government in Delhi for the suicide. While speaking on the tragic incident in Lok Sabha, Singh accused AAP supporters at the party's rally of instigating and provoking the farmer to end his life.

Meanwhile, a district magistrate has set the Delhi Police a deadline to submit documents in the case by 11 am. The DM has threatened of criminal proceedings if the deadline is not met.

The DM's orders come even as the police had rejected a probe ordered by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's government. In stern words, the DM on Thursday hit out at the Delhi Police for refusing to join the magisterial probe ordered by the Delhi government.

Gajendra Singh, a resident of Nangal Jhamarwada village in Dausa, tied a cloth to a tree and committed suicide at AAP's rally venue. He also left a suicide note stating that he had three children and had been disowned by his father due to crop damage after recent rains and hailstorm.

A purported suicide note was also recovered from the spot which also had his family's contact number.
