2011 census data on religion: India has 79.8% Hindus, 14.2% Muslims

According to the latest 2011 census data on religion, India has witnessed a moderate rise of 0.8% in Muslim community a 0.7% decline in Hindu community in the period of ten years between 2001 and 2011.
On Tuesday, the Registrar General and Census Commissioner unveiled census figure on religion, which revealed 96.63 crore Hindu population and 17.22 crore Muslim population in India. The total population of India was 121.09 crore, as per the release. It took over four years to release the data after compilation.
The caste data is yet to be unveiled. On 3 July, data related to socio-economic status of the population was made public.

Hindu population in India is 96.63 crore (79.8 %)
Muslims in India 17.22 crore (14.2%)
Christians in India 2.78 crore (2.3%)
Sikhs in India 2.08 crore (1.7%)
Buddhists in India 0.84 crore (0.7%)
Jain in India 0.45 crore (0.4%)
Other religions and persuasions (ORP) 0.79 crore (0.7%)
Religion not stated 0.29 crore (0.2%)
During the decade 2001-2011, the proportion of Sikh population decreased by 0.2 percentage point (PP), while the Buddhist population declined by 0.1 PP. No significant change was observed in the Christian and Jain population.
India's total population according to 2001 census was 102 crore, the population growth rate was 17.7% in the decade.
