Smoke and falling glass had been reported in an extra-alarm fire at the Old Chicago Main Post Office building on Tuesday morning that had ultimately blocked the Eisenhower Expressway.
Fire officials reported that a blaze at 404 W. Harrison St. in Chicago on multiple floors of the old post office had been took place. The authorities tweeted, "This is NOT a drill”. They informed later that no injuries had been reported immediately.
Glasses were seen falling from the building as firefighters battled the blaze with smoke pouring out of several windows. Traffic had been blocked on the Eisenhower Expressway, Interstate 290 which cuts through the building as it became Congress Parkway. It is said that the fire had been put out just before noon.
This incident has been marked as the the second fire in as many years at the vacant building, which caught fire in November 2014. That blaze had been believed to have been caused by trains running under the structure.
The United States Postal Service evacuated the building in 1997 for a newer and better facility.
