Top communication platform WhatsApp has banned more than 22 lakh Indian accounts in the month of June. This is done based on the received complaints through its grievance redressal channel and own mechanism to detect the violations. In May this year, WhatsApp also banned 19 lakh accounts and the June number is much higher. Close to 16 lakh accounts are banned in the month of April and 18.05 lakh accounts are banned in the month of March. The newly introduced IT rules are quite tough and they have been implemented from last year. They are mandatory for all the large digital platforms with more than 50 lakh users. The digital platforms should have to publish the compliance reports every month.
They have to inform the action implemented for the received reports of the complaints that are received. All the top digital platforms are against the moves but they are asked to implement. There are debates over the hate speech and misinformation. They are facing several challenges as they have to pull out the sensitive content soon before they turn viral and turn a dent for the image of the platform. WhatsApp published the user-safety reports along with the actions taken against the complaints. WhatsApp spokesperson said that they have been swift in responding for the complaints and they have been investing in artificial intelligence along with other technology processes. 632 grievance reports have been received and 64 accounts are actioned during June.
