The Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Chandrababu Naidu, has reached out to his counterpart in Telangana, Revanth Reddy, with a proposal to meet at the latter's residence. Though these two leaders share a long history, the optics of an NDA Chief Minister meeting with a Congress Chief Minister have sparked a flurry of speculation in political circles. The letter sent by Mr. Naidu suggests that the two states may explore areas of collaboration, a topic that has been a subject of discussion since the bifurcation of the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh a decade ago. In the letter, Mr. Naidu acknowledges the significant implications the Reorganization Act has had on the welfare and advancement of their respective states, and emphasizes the need to address these issues amicably and with utmost diligence. He proposes a face-to-face meeting on July 6th, Saturday afternoon, firmly believing that such an interaction will provide them with the opportunity to engage comprehensively on these critical issues and work towards mutually beneficial solutions for both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Mr. Naidu expresses confidence that their deliberations will lead to productive outcomes, reflecting a desire for constructive dialogue and collaboration between the two states.
The Chief Minister faces a complex dilemma, particularly now as the 10-year period for jointly governing Hyderabad as a capital is about to end. Andhra Pradesh has yet to establish a state capital. Mr. Naidu's Amaravati project has been at a standstill for the past five years after his predecessor, Mr. Reddy, cut off its funding sources. Significantly, the resounding defeat of Mr. Rao's Bharat Rashtra Samithi in Telangana has provided an opportunity for Mr. Naidu to expand his party's presence in the neighboring state. This is a significant chance for the TDP chief, who has been striving for a decade to establish his party in the newly formed state carved out of Andhra Pradesh. For Mr. Reddy, this situation may not be politically comfortable, but the two leaders are well-acquainted. Before joining the Congress, Mr. Reddy was a member of the Telugu Desam Party and a close associate of Mr. Naidu. In the 2015 note-for-vote scandal, in which Revanth Reddy was jailed, Mr. Reddy was allegedly acting as Mr. Naidu's envoy to a nominated member of the assembly, urging them to vote in favor of the TDP.
According to reports, Mr. Reddy is allegedly offering ₹ 50 lakh to a party member. Additionally, he is building connections across political boundaries, meeting with various BJP leaders, including party president JP Nadda, during his recent trip to Delhi. When his warm interaction with the Prime Minister, addressing him as "Bada bhai (elder brother)" during Narendra Modi's visit to the state in March, drew attention, Mr. Reddy explained it as a need for cordial relationships.
