During substantial rain in various states of India, the India Meteorological Department has issued red alert notifications for numerous areas in Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, northern Punjab, northern Haryana, eastern Rajasthan, southwest Uttar Pradesh, northwest & eastern Madhya Pradesh, and Odisha. The latest forecast indicates that these places can expect moderate to heavy rainfall in the coming three hours, raising concerns about flash floods, landslides, and flooding. The IMD mentions that the red alert in Jammu & Kashmir includes districts like Poonch, Mirpur, Rajouri, Reasi, Jammu, Ramban, Udhampur, Samba, Kathua, Doda, and Kishtwar. In Punjab, districts such as Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Nawashahr, Rupnagar, Moga, Ludhiana, Barnala, and Sangrur are under red alert; while in Himachal Pradesh, Mandi, Una, Bilaspur, Sirmaur, and Solan have similar warnings. In Haryana, the districts of Yamuna Nagar, Ambala, Kurukshetra, Panchkula, and SAS Nagar are on the same alert.
From 8:30 am on Tuesday to 5:30 am on Wednesday, many areas in Jammu & Kashmir experienced significant rainfall. The most was seen in Reasi with 203 mm, followed by Katra with 193 mm, Batote with 157.3 mm, Doda with 114 mm, and Baderwah with 96.2 mm. Jammu city recorded 81 mm, and other places like Banihal (95 mm), Ramban (82 mm), Kokernag (68.2 mm), and Pahalgam (55 mm) also had substantial rain. Additionally, during that time, rainfall was noted in Srinagar (32 mm), Samba (48 mm), Kishtwar (50 mm), Rajouri (57.4 mm), and Qazigund (68 mm). Fresh updates at 6:45 am on September 3 reported very heavy rain in Reasi, measuring 230.5 mm. Besides Jammu & Kashmir, many states saw widespread rainfall. From 8:30 pm on Tuesday to 5:30 am on Wednesday, intense rainfall was recorded in Chhattisgarh, while moderate rain was noted in parts of Haryana, Uttarakhand, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, coastal Odisha, coastal Maharashtra, coastal Karnataka, and the Andaman Islands. Furthermore, the Directorate of School Education Jammu stated on Tuesday that all government and private schools in Jammu Division will be closed on September 3 due to bad weather and safety risks.
